Hard Drive Recovery After Encountering 'Overlapped Extent Allocation'

Is your Mac Disk Utility or fsck command line utility reporting errors that it is unable to repair? Don't be surprised! Mac is quite a sturdy application, but it was never labeled as a fail-safe application! Such problems occur with any version of Mac OS X. To solve the problem, you need sound technical knowledge, otherwise, you will create problems instead of solving any. In case, you cannot handle the recommended solution, seek help from a hard drive recovery specialist providing data recovery services in New Jersey, or in your area. It is fairly simple to get such services in high rise areas, like NJ, where highly reliable service providers are available.

Consider, your Mac fsck command line utility or Disk Utility report following error message:

'overlapped extent allocation'

This means, two files are occupying the same space on your Mac hard disk. Though a rare phenomenon, every time it happens, at least one of the two files will have data loss in all probability. In case, your system reports it, do not install any recovery software, or any other software.

How to recover from such a situation?

Method 1

  • Backup as much data as you can.

  • Use a Mac Install or Restore disc to Erase and Install the Mac OS X. After this, replace or restore files using backup.

Method 2: Works only if you have Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volumes

  • If your Mac has 10.4.2 or later version, then you need not erase the volume. Startup using the disc or another 10.4.2 or later volume, and use Disk Utility to repair the problem volume. In such a situation, using "DamagedFiles" folder, you will be able to review affected files.

  • If you do not have the required disc or volume (of version Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later), you can try to start your computer in single-user mode. After this, just use fsck to repair.

Note: In case, you don't have 10.4.2 or later Install disc or volume, don't install the update, or any other software, as it may cause more loss.

Method 3: * Only for advance users

  • You may delete or remove the problem files using the command line utility. After this, recreate or restore these files from a backup. This method may work in case, the above stated methods fail.

  • Opt for hard drive recovery to get rid of your problem. These service providers have expertise in handling such cases of data recovery in New Jersey.
